Hahn's Macaw

Latin Name:  Diopsittaca nobilis nobilis

Description

Hahn's macaws aka the Red Shouldered macaw, are 11 to 12  inches and is the smallest of the mini macaws and a very popular choice for a companion.  Their compact size is a factor, but their personalities are what attract most people. They have the bare patch of skin around their eyes, thick black beaks with some horn colour at the top.  Primarily green, with red under the wings and at the shoulders.  As they mature they have a bit of blue on their heads.

Average Lifespan

The average life span for a hahn's is 40+ years. The main reason that birds die young is because of either accidents or bad nutrition! Don't let your pet become a statistic! Read as much as you can to make your home bird friendly and bird safe, clip those wings, and follow good nutritional practices.

Length

35 cm (11-12 ins.)

Sexing

There is no sexual dimorphism in the adult birds.

Trainability

Like most parrots they can learn to minic quite well, and can be taught tricks if you have the patience to take on that project.

Loudness

When it comes to noise, these guys are relatively quiet.  Though they still have a voice and can be loud, they do have their daily times where they like to use their voice, but in general they are quite.

Pet Potential

Hahn's are intelligent birds with clowny personalities.  They love to entertain, cuddle, perform and challenge their surroundings.  In other words with a mini macaw, they are all macaw, only smaller.  They are suited for a household with a lot of activity so they are not bored.  Because a bored bird is often a loud, destructive, unhappy creature, it is a good idea to consider this before making a Hahn's macaw part of your family.  They are known for their tendency to be well adjusted and are popular for this reason.

Cage

For housing, the Hahn's macaw needs a large enough cage.  We recommend at least 24 x 24 inches, larger is always better.

Diet

A good pellet suitable for macaws is good.  I leave a bowl of pellets available at all times.  They also enjoy a veg./grain mix with beans, and various seasonal fruit and vegetables (apples, oranges, grated beets and carrots, spinach, corn peas, squash, grapes, sweet potatoes, etc.). Occasional seed mix suitable for medium sized parrots.
