Finsch's Conure
Latin Name: Aratinga Finsch
Description
The Finsch's Conure is a 12 inch, mostly green Aratinga conure with a super personality. No known subspecies has been reported to date.
The tiny red triangle squarely on the front of its head can cause this species to be confused with the Red Fronted Conure. The size of the adult Red Fronted is noticeably larger at 14 to 15 inches. The underwing coloration is red and yellow. Juveniles are hard to identify
because immature Finsch's usually have no red feather coloration at
all and can be sold as other species as a result. Unfortunately, there are very few aviculturists in the United States
and Canada who keep the Finsch's Conure although breeding them is quite easy and they make great parents.
Average Lifespan
The average life span for a conure is
20 - 25 years. The main reason that birds die young is because of
either accidents or bad nutrition! Don't let your pet become a
statistic! Read as much as you can to make your home bird friendly
and bird safe, clip those wings, and follow good nutritional
practices.
Length
12 ins.
Sexing
There is no sexual
dimorphism in the adult birds.
Trainability
What makes these
birds so popular? Tame conures make great companion
pets. They are intelligent, capable of talking and learning
tricks.
Loudness
When it comes to
noise, these guys are relatively quiet. These larger conures,
although from the Aratinga group are relatively quite but they do
have moments in the day when they use their voice. Especially
in the morning and early evening, they are not suitable for
apartment dwellers.
Pet Potential
Very tame conures
offer lots of love and affection to their owners. They love to
play with their toys for hours, and chewing is good for their beaks.
Lots of wooden and leather toys are enjoyed. The Finsch's Conure makes a great pet for the average household. They are not fragile and they don't seem to hold a grudge. They are cuddly and loveable clowns and are capable of learning to talk.
Conures are very curious
and will get into everything if not watched so always have out of
cage supervision.

Cage
For housing,
an average size cage would be 24 x 24 inch minimum, however, larger
would be better.
Diet
A good pellet suitable
for conures is good. I leave a bowl of pellets available at
all times. They also enjoy a veg./grain mix with beans, and
various seasonal fruit and vegetables (apples, oranges, grated beets
and carrots, spinach, corn peas, squash, grapes, sweet potatoes,
etc.). Occasional seed mix suitable for medium parrots. Conures
enjoy peanuts and other types of nuts as a treat about twice a
week.
